DIY Valentine Paper Boxes

Was anyone else obsessed with making paper boxes out of notebook paper when they were kids?  I loved the fact that I could turn a regular sheet of paper into a cute little box that could hold my secret little treasures.  Fast forward to today…. I STILL love making cute little boxes, but now I use thick colored card stock and patterned paper!

Since Valentine's Day is this Friday, I whipped up some cute little boxes that are just perfect for housing some sweet treats or a small Valentine's Day gift inside of.  I'm going to give one to each of my kids, filled with fun surprises.  It's easy to make these boxes- each one took me less than 5 minutes to make!

The Sizzix Big Shot die cut machine has been on my crafty want list for a long time, and I recently got one and used it to make these adorable boxes.  It's everything I had hoped for and more!  It is very easy to use and is so durable.  For this project I used the Bigz XL Box #3 Die.

Easy Valentine Paper Boxes:
  • Sizzix Big Shot
  • Bigz XL Box #3 Die
  • Extended Cutting Pads
  • 12x12 sheet of card stock or patterned paper (1 sheet per box)
  • Adhesive
  • Any embellishments you'd like to use- more paper, bows, twine, etc.

1.  Cut your 12 x 12 sheet of paper in half, so that you have two sheets of 6 x 12" paper.  Make a "Sizzix sandwich-" stack an extended cutting pad, the Bigz box die with the box shape on top, your two pieces of card stock on top of that, and then the other extended cutting pad.

Place the "sandwich" on the Big Shot, and turn the handle clockwise so that the sandwich slides right through the machine.

2.  Pull out your paper pieces, that are now cut into four shapes, two of each size.  Follow the directions on the Bigz XL Box die to make your box...

The directions that come with the die are very easy to read and come with great photos, but basically all you will do is fold the paper where the creases are, and apply adhesive to all the edges of the the small tabs.  Attach the sides to a larger piece by attaching the longest side with adhesive to the large middle section of the bigger piece.  Fold the front panel of the box up and adhere the side tab.

3.  Apply adhesive to the low long tab on the back of the box, and add the last large piece (the back of the box) to the three tabs with adhesive on them.

Marvel at how perfect your little box is, and how easy it was to make!

Now you can add whatever embellishments you would like to give your box some personality!

For my Valentine's Day boxes, I used some Cosmo Cricket Valentine's paper that I've had forever in my massive scrapbooking stash.  I cut out some of the little cards that I loved, and glued them onto the tops of the boxes.

Next time I make these boxes I'm also going to try making some cute paper bows, tie them with twine, and even try adding glitter!  My daughter made some boxes of her own and used glitter tape on them- they turned out so cute and sparkly!

These boxes are just perfect for party favors, gift boxes, or whatever else you can come up with.  I filled mine with some Valentine's Day treats, and can't wait to pass them out to my kiddos on Friday!

Free Printable Snake Valentines

I've been on a roll with the free printable Valentines these last few weeks, haven't I?  This is my last one before Valentine's Day, I promise.   I've decided that I really really like designing!

Doesn't it seem like there are more Valentine's for girls out there than there are for boys?  As a mom of two boys and two girls, it seems easier to find cute girl valentines than boy valentines.  Well, hopefully today I can help you moms of boys out!

These free printable valentines are easy- just click on the link to download, print (there's 4 per page), cut, and add a small toy snake to each one.  I found some colored snakes at the dollar store for 8 or 10 (can't remember) snakes for only $1, so these are very affordable, plus each child will get a small toy that they will love to play with, rather than candy that will be eaten in 5 seconds.  Perfect for the schools who don't want your kids bringing candy to school, like mine!

Just click on the link below to download!

Easy Customized Valentine's Day Cards

This post brought to you by Treat.com. All opinions are 100% mine.

Valentine's Day is one of my favorite holidays.  I love that there is a day devoted to showing your love for your significant other, kids, parents, grandparents, friends, teachers, and more!  One of the best ways to show your loved ones that you care about them is to TELL them just how much you care about them.  I love sending them personalized cards, and I just discovered a great website that helps me to do just that- it's called Treat!

Treat.com is an online service where you can create personalized, one-of-a-kind greeting cards and Photo Gifts that you can make on your computer or your iphone, and Treat will print and mail them for you!  You can even add your own photos to make the cards even more special!  With the personal messages and photos, these cards are so highly personalized that the receiver will want to keep their special card forever.

I decided to send some Valentine’s Day Cards love to a few special people in my life- my husband, my kids, my grandpa, my other grandparents, and my daughter's kindergarten teacher.

I started off with my husband, and found a card that was perfect for us!

I love that I could personalize the card with two photos of us, and then add whatever words on the inside and outside of the card that I would like to say.  My husband won't be expecting this, and will love getting this card in the mail in a few days!

My kids are constantly asking me if they got any mail, and 99 times out of 100, the answer is no.  This card I made will make their day!  I lvoe that there is a heart for each member of the family, and my kids will love receiving their personalized Valentine's Day card in the mail before the big day!

My grandpa, who I grew up living near and has since moved to another state, is one of my favorite people in the whole wide world.  He is the sweetest, kindest man and has a great sense of humor.  I wanted to send him a Valentine's Day card to show him that we love him and are thinking about him.  I love the card that I chose for him, because there is a photo of each of my kids, who he hasn't seen for a few years.  I'm sending an identical card to my other grandparent, who live in another state as well, so they can be reminded of how much we love and miss them.  I made an almost identical card for my other grandparents too!

My daughter has the BEST kindergarten teacher around, and I wanted to make a special card for her from my daughter and I to let her know how much we appreciate her and all of the hard work and time and effort she puts into teaching.

I love how cute the teacher card is that we used, and how easy it was to personalize.  In less than 5 minutes I had an amazing card that I know she will just love!

I am SO excited about the adorable cards that I made at Treat.com!  The cards totally fit my personal style, and I am proud of how great they look, and how happy the recipients will be to get their cards in the mail!  I love that I can have the cards sent directly to my recipients so I don't have to worry about addressing them or buying stamps.

You really need to check out Treat.com, and explore the site to see all of the cute cards, and then #SendMoreLove this Valentine's Day!  I have some great news for you!  I am sharing an exclusive promo code with my readers that will let you enjoy three cards for just $6!

The code is SENDMORELOVE and you must order your cards by 11 am Pacific time on 2/10/14 to get it on time for Valentine's Day.  You can mail all 3 cards directly to yourself for free, or direct to each of your recipients for just the price of a stamp (Expires 2/28/14, regular one time use).

DIY Painted Drawstring Valentine Bags

I have always had a thing for cute little muslin drawstring bags.  I have them in all different sizes, and love coming up with creative ways to use them!  They are perfect for party favors or for tucking small gifts inside.

Recently I was able to attend CHA for the first time (my dream come true!), and I was given a sample of muslin and burlap bags from SRM, a company that sells fabric bags, clear containers, and stickers.  I wanted to create some little valentine bags, and decided to get creative with some of the fun supplies that I was given from the awesome companies that I met with during the blogger networking party at CHA… more on that later this week!  I decided to stick with black, white, gold, and a little bit of red for my bags, but you can use any color and create any designs that you like!

DIY Painted Drawstring Valentine Gift Bags:

You'll Need:

1.  Place a piece of cardboard inside the bag that you will be painting, so that the paint won't bleed through to the other side.

Place the painter's tape on one side of your bag to create stripes.  Paint the area in between the painter's tape to create stripes on the bag.  I used chalkboard paint because I had originally wanted to write names on the outside of the bags on the chalkboard stripes, but then I changed my mind.  Let the paint dry completely.

2.  Once dry, slowly remove the painter's tape to reveal the painted stripes.  I love this part! ;)  For the next part, you can choose to draw a heart in the middle of your bag lightly with a pencil freehand (like I did), or trace around a heart shape if you're not quite sure of your drawing skills.

3.  Carefully paint in your heart.  You have a few options here- you can paint with a metallic gold paint (or any other color) like I did on my first bag.

You can also use an adhesive and glitter, like I did on my second bag with the red heart.  Tulip Fashion Glitter worked well, because it is meant to adhere to fabric and the glitter is supposed to stay on after multiple washing.  Just follow the directions on the box.

For my third bag I painted the whole thing black, and then painted in the word "love" with gold paint.  I LOVE the way this one turned out!  Next time if I were to paint the whole thing I would do it on the muslin, not the burlap, because it makes the burlap a little trickier to close at the top, but I just adore this look.  It's easier to close the other bags, too, if you leave the top drawstring section unpainted.

Now that I have my cute little bags, I just have to figure out what I'm going to be putting inside them!

Free Printable Pirate Valentines

While it's tempting to go out and just buy Valentine's Day cards at the store, I try to make my own cards each year.  These free printable pirate Valentines I'm sharing with you today are my favorite!  It just doesn't get much cuter than this little pirate face, don't you think?  I designed this guy from scratch, and just love him!

Each card says "ARRR Matey, A friend like you is better than buried treasure!"

All you have to do is download my free printable from here, cut, and glue on some chocolate coins.  I found my coins at the dollar store.  Easy peasy!

Use glue dots to stick the chocolate coins onto the card, and these cute little cards are ready to give away to your child's best maties!

If your kids' school has a no candy policy, then you can print out these free printable airplane valentines and attach a toy plane (only 5 for $1 at the dollar store!) to pass out…. the kids won't even miss the candy if a toy is involved, right? ;)

Get your home ready for Valentine's Day with these sparkly DIY XO glitter letters!

Or this fun and easy Valentine's cupcake liner garland!

But my favorite all time Valentine's Day project are these romantic Valentine's Day fortune cookies!  I show you how to open up (without breaking) store-bought fortune cookies, remove the boring fortunes, and then add in your own hot fortunes to give to your valentine!  I show you how to seal back up the package so your unsuspecting man (or lady) will never know, and I include free printable fortunes for you to download too!!

Free Printable DIY Toy Plane Valentines

Let's face it.  Most valentines that your kids bring home from school are pretty…. well, boring.  I am trying to add a little originality to my kids' Valentine's Day cards this year, so I decided to make some myself!

I spotted some cute little plane toys at the 99 Cent Store that were PERFECT for making some free printable valentines for you (and me) to print, add a toy plane, and pass out to friends!

Your kids will be the coolest, you won't be giving out more candy (just what kids need these days, right?), and they will be original valentines that no one else in the class will be passing out.  It's a win win!  Oh, and the package of toy planes only cost $1 for five planes, so 20 cents per valentine is totally reasonable.  $5 for a class set for my kindergartner.

Here's the easy directions!

You'll Need:

1.  Print and cut the free printable plane valentines.

2.  Use a small dot of hot glue on each wheels and under the front of the plane to attach the airplanes to each card.  Have your child sign his name on each one, and they're ready to go!!

I printed out two versions of the cards for you to choose from.  One that has the word "From" on it in the bottom right corner, and one that doesn't say "From" on it, the bottom is just blank.  There are four different sayings on each of the four cards that you can print.

Now I just have to hide these valentines so my kids don't start playing with the planes before they can pass them out!  Oh, and if you're worried about using hot glue to stick the planes on, don't worry!  If you use just a small dot of glue in each spot, the plane comes off if you pull it just a little bit.  The glue will definitely hold it in place for your kids to pass them out.

Here's another one of my favorites- free printable pirate valentines!  Just add a couple chocolate coins (dollar store carries these too!) for a unique and adorable boy valentine!

Here's a great Valentine's Day idea for the husband… an easy way to open up store-bought fortune cookies, remove the old boring fortune, and add your own own fun steamy fortunes (or use the free printable fortunes I include in the post)!!  Unique, easy, and oh so fun!

And while you're getting your craft on, these easy heart pillows will make your house look lovely!

Enjoy!
